All trans and gender diverse people deserve safety, dignity and equality.
But the treatment of trans and gender diverse people in prisons in NSW, similar to several other jurisdictions, is out of step with human rights.
Incarcerated trans and gender diverse people are often placed in prisons that don’t align with their gender or preference, and strip searched by people who are not their gender.
Trans women who’ve been incarcerated share that being strip searched by men can be traumatic, and that being placed in men’s prisons increases their vulnerability to violence, rape and self-harm.
Write to the NSW Premier and Corrections Minister to overturn the regulation that allows these human rights concerns today!
